Good Grammar Bar: A Business Accelerator Academy Student

Fallan Keyser is the owner of Good Grammar Bar –a downtown establishment located in the heart of downtown offering food, craft cocktails, local brews, and entertainment on the weekends. She’s also a participant in the Sandy Chamber’s KeyBank Business Accelerator Academy – a hands-on program designed to help business owners create and manage growth.

What inspired you to open Good Grammar Bar?
It’s always been a dream and passion of mine to have something of my own. I felt like downtown really needed somewhere to come and be able to get a good cocktail and not have to dress up and be fancy. So we created a very comfortable atmosphere. We get lots of people coming in for classic cocktails – but they can come from the lake or right after work.

Did you know what type of atmosphere and look you wanted your bar to have?
In the beginning, I didn’t know exactly how I wanted my bar to be. I think the space definitely dictated the atmosphere and style. Our walls are really unique and are inspired by people we grew up with, or listened to, or watched on TV. That gave it that comfortable atmosphere right away. You can recognize at least ten people on our wall and kind of feel at home or at ease while you’re here.

We also have two different demographics. We’re open during lunch so we get the lunch crowd. And at night it transitions and can get kind of dance-y.

What makes your bar unique?
Our bar is unique because we are heavily focused on customer interaction. Our staff is very friendly, and our cocktail menu is unique. We have a lot of fun putting it together and use a lot of local ingredients. Our bar has a lot of classics and it’s been fun to introduce them to customers and suggest different variations of drinks. We just brought in these flowers called buzz buttons – nowhere in SLC has them yet – but basically you eat the flower and it makes your mouth tingle and then you drink your cocktail and it enhances all the flavors.

How has the business accelerator academy helped you think about your business?
The Business Accelerator Academy has been amazing for me. Even though it’s always been a passion of mine to become an entrepreneur, I didn’t go to business school, so there were a lot of things I didn’t know going into it. This program has opened my eyes to a lot of different aspects of my business and helped me look at it differently.

What’s your biggest takeaway so far?
The biggest takeaway from the academy so far has been the financials. I was doing QuickBooks but hadn’t ever pulled any reports to know where we were at. It’s been great to learn how those reports look to a banker. It gives me an idea of how we can grow in the future and where I need to be.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned since owning your own business?
There’s been so many, but I’d say the biggest thing I’ve learned is that you really have to have perseverance. That is my favorite word now because you go through so many ups and downs – and a lot of downs at first when you’re trying to figure things out. If you don’t have that baseline of perseverance it’s going to make it even harder to push through.

Do you have any advice for future business owners or someone who wants to open their own business?
Decide which direction you want to go. If it’s a bar, then go talk to other bar owners first and ask them how they did it. Find out the hardest things they went through and what their biggest challenges are. Use them as wisdom and just go for it. Also, remember that it isn’t easy, but you can do it if you have that perseverance.
